You Will Love this Apple and Cinnamon Oatmeal

I wanted to get this oatmeal with apples recipe just right. So I tried and tested a range of options before I settled on the best way to make it.

I first tried cutting the apple into eight slices and cooking it with sugar in a small saucepan. I then added the sugary glazed apple slices onto warm oatmeal. It’s almost like apple pie and really quite delicious!!

The problem is that it takes at least for 15 minutes till the apples are cooked soft. I also needed an extra medium sized pot to cook oats. And, let’s face it, we’re often in a hurry in the morning.

So, I wanted to make this apple cinnamon oats recipe in less time with no extra washing for a busy weekday morning!

    So here it is!

You’ll dice the apples and caramelize them with brown sugar and cinnamon. With this simple change, it’s ready in less than 5 minutes and you don’t lose any taste. And the apple oats look just as good!

This apples & cinnamon oatmeal is flexible:

    • I removed cooked diced apples from the saucepan and top them on the oatmeal later. You can keep and cook the apples in oatmeal with water if you like.
    • If you prefer creamy apple cinnamon oatmeal, replace one cup of water with almond milk.
    • I add chia seeds or flax seeds on top before serving for extra fibre and texture.

    Ingredients for Apple Cinnamon Oats

This cinnamon, apple and oatmeal only requires a few pantry staples!

Brown sugar works very well to caramelize fresh apple. I use cane sugar for this recipe. You can also replace it with maple syrup, agave or honey.

Cinnamon in oatmeal is a must for this recipe. If it's short in your pantry, try apple pie spice as a cinnamon replacer.

Apple: What type of apple you use is totally up to you. I used Fuji which is sweet. If you use sweet apple, you can reduce the sugar.

Oats: This cinnamon and apple oatmeal is perfect for Autumn. I use old fashioned rolled oats for this recipe. Quick oats can lose their texture and flavour. For gluten-free, make sure it's gluten-free assured on the label

How to Make Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

I just love the aroma of spicy cinnamon filling up my kitchen while I cook these oats!

    How to make apple cinnamon

Before you cook oatmeal, make apple cinnamon. Place butter in a medium size saucepan and melt it over medium heat. Add brown sugar, lemon juice, apple and cinnamon. Simmer with medium heat until the apples become soft.

Keep stirring with a spatula so it doesn’t burn. It takes less than 5 minutes. Sugar glazed apple cinnamon is ready!

Removed the apples and the sauce from the pan. Otherwise they become too soft. If you prefer the softened apple, you can keep them in and cook with the oats.

    Making a perfect oatmeal texture

I've found that oats are cooked better if you don’t boil the water. It turns the oats into sticky glue.

Add water and salt into the saucepan. Once it's just below boiling, reduce the heat to a simmer before adding the oats. Stir regularly with a spatula to prevent sticking. You’ll get the perfect oatmeal texture.

That's it! Add apples, and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Top Tips for the Best Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

Oatmeal is incredible - it's so versatile. You can make variations easily by adding more fresh fruits, nuts, chocolate or dried fruits.

    Healthy apple cinnamon oatmeal recipe

You can replace butter with plant oil. My favourite is coconut or avocado oil. Olive oil for this recipe is not suitable as it’s taste is too strong and savory.

I prefer brown sugar for this recipe but it can be replaced with maple syrup or agave.
