Why this Spicy Edamame Recipe is so Good

Edamame is one of the most popular summer ingredients in Japan. Edamame season is from June to September. Kids love it, adults love it, and no one can stop eating it!

Edamame was a regular snack, side dish and bento addition when I was growing up! It's perfect for kids - both delicious and healthy.

The good thing - frozen edamame is available at most local supermarkets these days. There’s no need to wait until you go to a restaurant for spicy edamame anymore.

This seasoned spicy edamame uses a simple Japanese cooking technique, inherited from my mother.

The secret ingredient is Japanese sake. It draws out the umami of the spiced edamame.

Edamame pods - This Japanese style spicy edamame recipe uses regular frozen edamame. You can use any kind from the supermarket for this frozen edamame recipe. If you happen to come across fresh edamame, you need to cook them first.

Garlic: Fresh garlic is always in our pantry and is perfect for this recipe! Garlic seasoned edamame is almost impossible to resist!

Chili: I use Japanese red chili, takanotsume. It's super spicy, but you can use any chili from your pantry. It’s always worth knowing how hot your chili so that you can adjust the quantities to taste.

How to Make Spicy Garlic Edamame

This recipe is super easy to make. There’s just a few simple but important steps to follow:

    Make spicy seasoned sauce

seasoned sauce for Spicy Garlic Edamame with chopped garlic, chili and olive oil

Place all the ingredients apart from shelled edamame into a frying pan. The chili's spiciness is preserved by adding salt at this point. This is a key step for how to season edamame well.

Adjust the frypan heat to the lowest possible after you place the ingredients in the pan. This way, you’ll transfer all the flavour and aroma into the oil. Pay attention so that you don’t burn the ingredients.

    Add edamame pods

Once the aroma fills the room, add the frozen edamame pods. Increase the heat and stir-fry all the ingredients. Once you’ve coated the ingredients with the aromatic oil, pour sake in and put a lid on it and steam until the sake is absorbed throughout the ingredients. This is the key for how to make spicy shelled edamame more flavourful and umami rich.

That's it!! Serve immediately and enjoy!

Tips for the this Garlic Edamame Recipe

Can you eat edamame with pods?

Edamame shells are not edible. So, don’t forget to place a little container next to this edamame with garlic dish for your edamame shells.

    How to store

It's garlicky so keep this spicy edamame dish in an airtight container. I prefer a glass jar. A plastic container may produce an unwanted aroma.

    Servings: 2 people

    Ingredients

    • 1½ cup edamame (200g)
    • 2 cloves garlic
    • 1 Japanese red chili (takanotsume) (or any chili pepper)
    • 2 tablespoons Japanese sake
    • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    • ¼ teaspoon rock salt (Alpen Salz or any regular salt)

    Instructions

    • Place oil, salt, chili and garlic into a frying pan. Turn on lower heat. Allow the ingredients to transfer flavour into the oil. It takes around one to two minutes. Pay attention not to burn the ingredients.
    • Once the aroma of the ingredients is released, place frozen edamame into the pan. Bring the heat up to medium and stir-fry allowing the oil coat the ingredients.
    • Once the oil coats the edamame pods, pour sake into the pan and put a lid on it. Steam for two minutes. That's it! Serve immediately.

    Recipe Notes:

    • It's important to add chili pepper and salt at the same time. This way the spiciness of pepper is preserved.
    • Edamame shells are not edible. Serve the cooked edamame dish with a container. You can leave the shells in there. Store this spicy edamame in an airtight glass container in the fridge for 3 days.
    • This recipe uses frozen edamame from the supermarket. If you use fresh shelled edamame, they need to be cooked in advance. Check my article on how to cook edamame like Japanese restaurants.
